Is Your Dog Really a Little Wolf? Part 3 – More Physical and Biological Adaptations

In Part 1 of this topic, I asked the question: “Is your dog really a little wolf?” and answered that the domestication of dogs means they are not wolves in a behavioral sense. And because of artificial selection and more recent hybridization, most dog breeds do not even look like wolves. But despite all the obvious differences, scientists contend that, yes, dogs are a subspecies of wolves. Most likely, an extinct, ancient wolf was the common ancestor of today’s dogs and today’s wolves. Perhaps canine genetics and biology will illuminate this further.
Scientists state that modern wolves and dogs carry 98.8% — 99.09% of the exact same DNA, and most importantly, wolves and dogs can interbreed and produce fertile offspring, indicating a very close biological relationship between the two species. Yet the differences are many.
Below are a few of the major physical differences between the species:
- Dogs have smaller skulls than wolves, shorter snouts, smaller feet and smaller teeth.
- Dogs have more expressive faces. The Levator anguli oculi medialis muscle above the inner eyebrow allows dogs to raise their inner brow. Wolves lack that muscle.
- Dogs have 4 – 30 copies of AMY2B, the gene responsible for starch digestion. Wolves only carry 2 – 8.
- Dogs have slightly shorter digestive tracts than wolves, making them better adapted to a varied diet.
- Dogs are facultative (elective) carnivores while wolves are more commonly considered true carnivores.
- Dogs’ brains are proportionately smaller than wolves’ brains, however, both have complex structures suited to their functional environments.
- Dogs are capable of reproducing twice a year while wolves only reproduce once a year.
- Dog litter sizes, depending on the breed, normally vary from 1 pup to 15 pups. Wolves generally produce 4 to 6 pups.
- Dogs’ immune systems have been compromised by decades of inappropriate diets, environmental pollution and inbreeding which can intensify hereditary genetic problems. Because of many autoimmune weaknesses, dogs, as a species, are no longer considered to have healthy immune systems. Wolves have strong immune systems.
- Dogs usually live longer than wolves primarily because of human care. Wolves in the wild average an 8-to-10-year lifespan. However, wolves in captivity can live up to 17 years.
Other interesting differences center more on behavioral/environmental changes, and a few include:
- Wolves are independent problem solvers. Dogs tend to solicit humans for help in tricky situations.
- Wolves fail to form attachments to humans. Dogs can rarely survive without humans.
- Wolves play until sexual maturity when all playing stops, but dogs continue enjoying play activities all of their lives.
- Wolves avoid eye contact with humans. Dogs often gaze at humans with each species enjoying prolonged eye contact. Both human /dog eye contact and petting raise oxytocin levels (the feel-good hormone) in humans and dogs.
Wolves are wolves and dogs are dogs, and yet the most significant difference between them is in their behavior not their biology. If your Pug looked like a Pug but acted like a wolf it might seem comical, but it would not be acceptable. And if your Malamute, who physically resembles a wolf, began behaving like a wolf it would be downright dangerous. Humans do not want to share their homes with wolves, and many of us absolutely love sharing our homes with dogs.
When wolves self-domesticated or allowed us to tame them into dogs, they achieved incredible species success. However, that success fell upon dogs, not upon wolves. As a species, the Gray Wolf (Canis lupus) is in trouble. With substantial help from federal agencies and environmentalists, Gray Wolves were taken off the Endangered Species List in 2021, but needing vast tracts of natural, undisturbed wilderness to thrive, wolves’ futures are precarious as those lands are frequently being exploited and destroyed for their resources and commercial use. And as the wilderness vanishes so will the wolves. Sooner rather than later we may be living in a world that will never hear the midnight song of a wolf pack.
Dogs, on the other hand, are considered one of the most successful mammalian species, ranked just below #1– human beings. With over 400 breeds of dogs inhabiting nearly every corner of the world, dogs have developed into a stunningly diverse species of every size, shape and color and with an exceptional range of human-valued skills. Their ability to form deep emotional bonds with another species (us) sets them apart from nearly every other mammal and ensures our desire for their continued health and happiness. Far surpassing wolves as a successful species, let’s hope our dogs will be around just as long as we are because a world without dogs is simply unimaginable.
In Part 4, the final segment of this article, we will explore two important ways in which we as a species are beginning to have a negative impact on the health and longevity of our dogs. It may be time for us to seriously ask ourselves if the relationship between Homo sapiens and Canis lupus familliaris is still equally beneficial for both species.
